Boring news, but good news. The vitals were ok, weight stable and the blood work was fine. Another reprieve for 3 weeks.

I’m going to get scanned sometime in February. That will be the real test as to how “good” things are.

Off to chemo. Busy day as I also have an appointment with the heart Doc. I'm feeling well.

Speaking of feeling well, all the blood work was good and so were the vital signs. The good poison dispensing went smoothly and I was out of there only half an hour late for the heart doc. The heart doc visit was good with a "normal" EKG.

What more could I want...............? A visit to Boca to see my mom. Off tomorrow morning for 2 nights.

MRI Brain Scan

I had a routine MRI brain scan done today. I say routine, as the most likely place for lung cancer to spread is the brain. So they need to keep and eye on my brain. I'm feeling well and am asymptomatic for any noggin problems. It's just a precaution. If they find a brain I will let you all know.

And we keep going.

All is well with the blood work, vitals and weight. I will closely monitor this 21 day cycle to see how I feel and what problems I note.

I met with Dr. Schraeder and this is what we discussed.

1. We will continue the current treatment and dosage of the Alimta and Avastin every 21 days. If I note an
increase in lousy days he will then consider lowering the Alimta dosage.

2. I was checked for the EML4-ALK genetic mutation just over a year ago. I was negative for the test

which means that I am not a candidate for this new drug. Oh well. Only about 5% of people

tested are ever positive. Pretty tough odds.

3. I will get a MRI brain scan done in the very near future.

I had a good meeting and consult with my original oncologist and friend, Dr. Erlich.

Three suggestions to Dr. Schreader were as follows.
1. Lower my Alimta dosage if I continue to have more lousy days during the 21 day cycle.
2. Have me checked for the EML4-ALK genetic mutation.
This would tell if I am able to receive a twice a day pill instead of the IV Infusions.
3. Get a follow up MRI brain scan done. My last scan was over a year and a half ago. With my type of
cancer the most likely spread would be to the brain which would be more difficult to treat.

All is well. Bloodwork, vitals and weight are all good and stable. But I am still going to try and negotiate some sort of break in the treatment without putting myself in jeopardy.

" October 18-I arrived in Joburg after a long flight from Dulles with a stop in Dakar, Senegal. Got picked up at the airport by the team driver. There was one other player and the kit manager with us. We took about a 2 hour drive to Potchefstroom, where we would be staying and training.

October 19-Today, all the other players would be arriving, so we didn't have any training. We got our kit, which consisted of two shirts, two jackets and pants that we would have to wear around the grounds when we were not training (blue and green). We also got our training shorts, three quarter pants, shirts and socks for when we played. So this day, I just explored the nearby fields, got to eat, sleep and watch some TV to try and adjust to the time. I got to meet everyone, including my new roommate at dinner and at our team meeting afterwards. The coach hugged me! It was kind of adorable. Every day, we would eat our three meals all together as a team (38 girls plus about 8 staff). For breakfast, there would always be a protein like eggs plus toast and cereal. And for each meal that would have fresh fruit and coffee and tea and juice and water. For lunches and dinners, typically a lean protein, often chicken, always with pasta or rice, plus mash or grilled veg. Typically pretty good!

October 20-Today, we also didn't have much to do soccer wise. We travelled around in small groups taking our medical examinations, balance and stability tests and things like that. We also had a team sports psychology session at night after dinner. The good news is that I am healthy! It was a pretty good day, relaxed, and I got to know some of the girls better which was nice. They all really enjoyed my accent, and likened to calling me Jay Z because we have similar accents (supposedly). My roommate Mary was really nice and outgoing so it helped me to meet the other girls on the team.

October 21-This was the beginning of the really hard work. Today we had fitness testing starting bright and early 8 in the morning and it ran until about 1:30 of the afternoon (think of the longest, hardest gym session you have ever done, pushed to your max out on each exercise with everyone watching). We had our head physio Warren and a sports science team from the complex we stayed at testing everything: height, weight, body fat, jump tests for leg power and jump height, hip flexibility, push ups in 1 minute (I did 30!), sit ups in two minutes (full sit ups, I did around 70), pull ups (I actually did 6!), speed, agility, overhead throws and finally the dreaded yo yo intermittent recovery test. This requires endurance and sprinting. You run to a 20 yard cone and back before the certain beep, and then you get 10 seconds recovery, but the beeps get closer and closer together so you have to get faster as youre getting more tired. Really tough and I struggled, especially in the altitude (about 4000 feet above sea level). I did pretty well (above average) in push ups and pull ups, my sit ups were pretty good as well, but I need to work on speed, agility and the yo yo test specifically. The head physio gave us a strength and conditioning program to follow. When that was all done, a short break to eat and watch the South African womens cricket take on England. Short side story, I met a girl on the England team who actually went to my university! Small world. Then at 4:30, we had soccer training. Quick warm up, some ball touches, passing, possession 4v4 and shooting. I did okay, nothing spectacular. Then before dinner, the dreaded ice baths. Ice baths/cold baths for 4 minutes, then nice hot pool, then back to cold for 4, then end with hot. We couldnt even fit a sports psychology session in because it was such a long day!

October 22-Today was relaxed. We were going to play an intersquad game in the afternoon. Rookie players vs the team veterans. I started at forward, but didnt get much of a look at goal. Did a lot of running of the ball, and once again the altitude was killing me. I only played a half so that the coaches could get a look at everyone. The veterans only won 2-1 in the end. Pretty good performance from us rookies! The coaches later had a meeting with just the new players and said that they were impressed with us and that it wasnt easy to come into a new team where everyone knows each other, etc. They said everyone would get their chance eventually, so this made me feel a bit better. The next camp and game is against Zimbabwe in December. I wont know if I get called up for it until December, but even if I dont, its not the end for me. I need to train, follow the program, and find a team to play with regularly. I will get my chance and hopefully I can force my way onto the team!

October 23-We all headed our separate ways. We took the team bus to the airport which was cool. Also, cameras had been following us the last few days so I am hoping to find some pictures or video since I didnt get to keep ANY of my kit (sad face). It was a great experience, I got to see what it was like to be a pro athlete and I know how much work it will take to break it, but I got my chance and I intend to take it, and work hard when I am not there so I can impress them all next time! I got on a plane to Capetown and hung out with Ryan and Dean, and we went for dinner with Merle and Tony who were my wonderful hosts. I stayed at their place.

October 24-Hung out with Yaron, pretty much relaxed after my tough week. Went to a nice Italian dinner with the family. Delicious food.!

October 25-Got to see the Football For Hope/Grassroots Soccer program through Yarons American girlfriend Kristin who worked there. A really cool experience to see and I got to play some soccer with the employees and some kids. They loved my iphone and watch! We had another delicious dinner at the home, and I got to see Trev and Ilana (and Talia and baby Harry too!) Harry likes to hit me, but thats ok.

October 26-Played some more FIFA and went to lunch with Yaron and Kristin. Then at night, went to the Kings of Leon concert in Capetown with Ryan and his girlfriend Zara. We were in Golden Circle, so on the ground right up front by the stage! It was really awesome, they were good live.

October 27-Today I had to leave, so I packed up, Yaron and I played some FIFA-did I mention I beat him quite often? I also beat him in a good game of ping pong-before he dropped me at the airport. I got to see Silvi briefly as well which was nice. Overally, my visit to Capetown was wonderful and relaxing and it was so nice to see the boys and everyone. Special thanks to Merle and Tony for housing and taking care of me so wonderfully, and to Yaron for taking me around! "

Banyana to camp in Potchefstroom

Robyn leaves this coming Monday October 17th for Potchefstroom (near Johannesburg, South Africa). Good luck Rob. I'm so proud of you.

Banyana Banyana will camp at the Potchefstroom High Performance Centre from Wednesday next week as they begin their preparations for next year's Olympic Games.

Safa spokesperson Matlhomola Morake revealed to KickOff.com that a 38-member team will undergo a rigorous fitness test at the facility, under the watchful eye of Banyana coach Joseph Mkhonza.

"Their fitness levels will be assessed through various physical tests. The camp will be for three days, from October 19 to 23, and will mark the beginning of their preparations of the Olympic Games, which by the way are not very far away.

"As Safa, we are prepared to render all the necessary assistance that will be needed in these preparations to make sure that the team is well prepared to raise our flag high during the Olympics," Morake says.

Banyana completed a 4-1 aggregate victory over Ethiopia last month to book a place at the 2012 edition of the Olympics Games, which will be held in London.

Mkhonza has requested that Safa organise friendly matches against strong European teams so that his charges will be well prepared ahead of their Olympic campaign.

Banyana Banyana Start Preparing for the Olympics

Head coach of the Senior Women's National team, Joseph Mkhonza, has called up thirty eight (38) players for camp to fitness tests and training. This is part of the plans to prepare the team for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Since the formation of Banyana Banyana in 1993, this is the first time they qualified for the Olympic Games. This is a great achievement for women's football in general, and a proud moment for the South African Football Association (SAFA).

During this camp, the players will go for scientific testing and training at the High Performance Centre based at the University of Potchefstroom from 19 to 23 October 2011. The team will be separated into two squads which will enable them to play a practice match on Saturday (22 October 2011) in Sasolburg.

Mkhonza says that early preparations augur well for international competition. "Since this will be the first time Banyana Banyana participates in the Olympic Games, I want to ensure that the team's fitness levels are up to where they should be when we get to London because it will be a competitive tournament for the girls next year. I want to ensure that we play to our best potential in London without worrying about the players fitness levels. I have seen some of the nations that have been taking part in international competitions, the first thing you notice is that they are extremely fit and we need to work towards that," said Mkhonza.

Most of the players called up for this camp took part in the final Olympic qualifiers, while some are from the squad that was at the All Africa Games in August. Mkhonza has also called up players he identified during the Sasol National Championships who have never been given an opportunity to participate in National team activity.

"It is important to get a good mix of players and build a strong squad leading up to the tournament. I have players coming from last season's Sasol League National Championship, as well as some players coming from the international clubs who would like to represent South Africa in the Olympics. I believe this is the best time to give them a chance," said Mkhonza.

I just heard from Dr. Schraeder and he was "very pleased" with the results of the scans. Things are stable and there is no evidence of spread anywhere else. There is however, something still showing up in my upper right lung but it has not grown or moved ! I am thrilled. The battle continues.............

Postponing the complete gene sequence

After consulting with the Doctors involved in my treatment it's been decided not to do the complete gene sequence right now. The rational is two fold. Firstly, they do not want to subject me to any kind of surgical procedure at this time. Secondly, as long as the current treatment regimen is keeping "things" under control no new or different protocols are needed right now !

I guess the positive way to look at this is that the price for the sequence keeps coming down. Also, every day new drugs are being discovered or tested. We live in a good time to get sick. That sounded very weird. I've bucked the odds and plan to keep doing just that.

Whenever I go and play with him (pardon the expression) he gets me flowers, wine and puts on fine music and then proceeds to hump the hell out of my arms. Another good check up today, All the vitals were good, weight stable, blood work fine. I discussed a few issues with Dr. Schraeder but all is well. Chemo went without a hitch and I was out in 3 hours. How is that then ?

My next chemo session will be October the 10th and my next scans will be October 4th.

I know we learn something from this. Just look around at what we have (for the most part). Are things perfect ? No. But our plight is a lot better than theirs ! Thank you Mr. White and Mr. Hutchins for opening my eyes. G*d bless.

Rugby on TV and Field Hockey live

^{I must say that the power cuts seem a little more frequent than I remember in the past. But you make do with generators, timing and good old wood or gas stoves.}
^{Went to The Coffee Shoppe to watch the Springboks play Wales. Boks won 17 – 16. Very Lucky.}

^{Off to Zimkids to watch afternoon activities run by the council of elders. Silvi came with and saw the kids and the Center for the first time. Then back to the house for tea and cake.}

^{Silvi and I went to watch Here is the breakdown for the field hockey adventure:}

^{3 minute drive to the stadium to watch the Africa...........final between South Africa and Egypt.}
^{Opted to park outside the stadium and walk in. That took 1 minute 30 seconds.}
^{Paid our US$2 entry fee and went to look for seats. Decided against the grand stand and went to sit on the grass at the opposite side of the field. Superb seats.}
^{We left about 3 seconds after the game ended. South Africa winning 1 to 0}
^{The drive home took a grueling 3 minutes.}

^{Sunday night dinner at Silvi and Lee was wonderfully prepared by Loveness. Sadza, chamoolia and nyama (corn meal, veggies and meat). My favorite African dish.}

Visit with the Mhlope Family and dinner with the Elders

Went to Old Luveve to see the Mhlope family. I had some gifts for them as well as I brought along Mr. Khumalo (our Zimkids builder) to see what repairs were needed at the house.

Went back to the house for a quick siesta and then did a drive around with Silvi. It's so much easier (and legal) to have someone else drive and me film ! Went back to Ilan's house/internet cafe where I was able to “punk” Ilan (via phone) really well with the help of Silvi and Opah.

In the evening I took the Zimkids elders, Tinashe and Dennis out for a Chinese dinner. What a load of fun meeting the new group of elders. Then off to the ice cream store for dessert. The kids loved it when I tried out my Ndebele language skills. Lionel has promised to give me a school book on learning to speak Ndebele. I wonder why :)

I then meet Silvi, Lee and few other friends for dessert at a restaurant in suburbs. Who says there are very few places to eat out in Bulawayo. More than you think.

^{Went on a book search for learning Ndebele, the language spoken in Bulawayo. I think I will be able to get the books at one of the primary schools.}

^{I picked up 15 chicken meals for all the workers at the Zimkids Center. They were delighted to get something other than sadza and chamoolia. I'm glad there was only a small piece of chicken left over for me as even double doses of Crestor wouldn't have helped with the grease !!!}

^{Back to Solomon's supermarket for a food shop for me to take back to the USA. I was also able to give Mr. White and Mr. Hutchins a new shirt each.}

^{Friday evening I was once again able to make the Minyan for services. Then it was off to the Solomon's for a wonderful Shabbat dinner. Thanks Lee, Joyce and Loveness.}

Matopos and cricket

We opted to forgo the morning bush walk and sleep in. Rise and shine at 7 am and then breakfast at 8 am. We were joined for breakfast by the Lodges owner who I had met previously at the Hide in Hwange. Then it was a short drive back to Bulawayo for my morning meeting with the Doctors. What a get away and so close.
My meeting with Dr. Dixon and Dr. Ndebele was very productive. I had brought with me a number of packets containing samples of the medical supplies we are intending to ship to them in Bulawayo. Very few items were rejected and I was able to establish which items were hugely important. I go back to the USA with a good clear idea of what's needed and wanted.

Early afternoon Silvi and I went to watch the International cricket match between Zimbabwe and Pakistan. Here is the chronology:

3 and a half minute drive to the “stadium” Queens Sports Ground.
45 seconds to Park the car.
42 second walk to the main gate.
Pay your US$3 entry fee.
38 seconds to find a great seat.
Watch a very entertaining game.
49 seconds back to the car.
4 Minute drive back to the store (heavy traffic)

What I'm trying to show here is how ridiculously close and accessible everything is here. So stressful :)

Wonderful dinner with Lee and Silvi at Maxi's. It was wonderful to see my good friend Massimo Bulletti (the owner) again He is a very special man. I will elaborate later on.

Visit to the Center and Matopos

Went to see the Center. I am so delighted and impressed at how things have progressed. Good to see all the people again. I am planning to bring lunch for everyone (14) on Friday.

Silvi and I drove out to Matopos to spend the night at Big Cave Lodge. It's a 45 minute ride from the house but once you are in the Matopos hills it's like being in another world. Peaceful, impressive, sheer beauty, haunting................... but don't take my word for it. Check out the pictures once I post them.

^{We did a short sunset drive with our guide Clia. Then we climbed this huge granite hill for sundowners and watched the sunset. Back to the lodge for a lovely dinner with all the other guests (5 German tourists). After sitting around the campfire and}~~^farting~~^{schmoozing it was time to hit the hay. Not before Silvi and I walked up the small granite hill behind our bungalows. It took us about 20 minutes to find the Southern cross and figure out which direction was north. Last of the great white navigators !}

Relaxing day

Had a great nights sleep and woke to a bright blue morning sky with a slight chill in the air. I thought I had slept in but it was actually 6:40 am.

Went over to Ilan's house/internet cafe to visit Opah and the rest of the Bucknall Place gang. Then on to “Thee Coffee Shoppe” for a late breakfast with Silvi and Lee. I got the call from the airport that my luggage had arrived. So, off I went to pick it up. After shmoozing for 20 minutes I walked out, bag in tow, with nothing missing. I was elated. One of the airport cops and his friend asked me for a ride into town and I was only too happy to oblige. You never know when that cop's help may be needed :)

Unpacked and sorted out all the “stuff”. Dispensed some gifts and then went back to town (7 mins) to go and have tea and scones with Silvi. Back to the Solly home for a nice quiet dinner with Lee and Silvi. Watched some soccer (England vs Wales) on TV and then to bed for an early night. How stressful was that ?

Bulawayo arrival

It was a really nice and comfortable flight and I had a decent nights sleep to boot. For the last couple of hours there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Just a beautiful view of Africa below.

I had a short connection in Johannesburg for my Bulawayo flight so I knew it was going to get interesting and challenging. I got to the gate as they were boarding the buses to take us out to the plane. I checked on the status of my luggage making the flight and was told it would make it. I again checked when I got to the plane and once more, they said that it should be there. My gut feeling told me otherwise. Well guess what ? On arrival in Bulawayo my luggage had not made the flight. So now it's hurry up and wait. The best scenario is that is gets here tomorrow. The worst case is.....................aah, never mind.

Now here is something ironic. A friend of mine from Bulawayo was robbed a while ago and basically lost all his clothing, amongst other things. I spoke to Silvi and asked if he would ask the Solomon brothers (his 3 sons) if they would put together a collection of clothing they were prepared to part with. The clothing was collected and guess who may have to temporarily use it ? Yes indeed, me. I'm sure my friend won't mind. I also plan to make a few local purchases.

Silvi picked me up from the airport and had a nice pepper steak meat pie waiting for me. The weather is stunning. For the next 8 days it will be sunny with a high of 80 f and a low of 55 f. The smells are so familiar and nothing has changed in 4 months. What did I expect? The power is actually on right now. Amazing.

We have lots planned. Watching live international field hockey and cricket. For TV viewing, World Cup Rugby starts in a few days and of course the usual array of English Premiership football games. Go Man United.

The transition to driving on the left hand side is fairly easy for me. Just have to keep a keen eye on the pedestrians, bicyclists and assorted bad drivers. Just like in Baltimore which, by the way, was voted the second worst drivers in the USA. Number one was Washington DC. I stopped in town to get a few items of clothing (t-shirt, shorts and 3 underwear) and US$50 later I had em. What the hell was I on ?

We went to Tanya Goldwasser's for dinner where Laurence made multiple great tasting pizzas with assorted toppings. There has to be a commercial demand for these.Business idea.

A couple of things I noticed on the drive around was that most of the street lights in Kumalo have been repaired and a fair amount of potholes filled in. Also, a fair amount of “robots” (traffic lights) seemed to be functioning. Some even seem to have LED lights in them. Maybe there is progress here.

After arriving in Zurich from Frankfurt and wandering around the airport like a lost f*rt I finally found the Swiss lounge. I have to say that it was misinformation that caused me to “wander”. At least it wasn't for 40 years in the desert !

I had a nap and a shower and now I feel somewhat rejuvenated. This place is so clean.

No more plummeting down escalators for me. I used the elevator this time as I didn't want to appear again on the TV show “The World's Dumbest”.

I'm on Lufthansa first class to Frankfurt and there are only 3 passengers (including me) on the upper deck of the B747-400. Talking about being pampered. Wow. I just had a wonderful dinner and now I'm off to la la land.

It's a good thing I have all this available to me as I am really feeling the effects of chemo from 5 days ago. These days are my tough ones. Slight nausea and very tired. Hopefully, by the time I arrive in Bulawayo (on Monday) I will be in fine shape.

I think we were very lucky with regards hurricane "Irene". Our power is still on even though it went off last night for about 2 hours. Lots of tree debris and a few big trees down. I'm thankful it turned out this way for us. My thoughts and well wishes are with all those who suffered much worse off. It truly is better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

This past week we ended up like a James Bond martini. Shaken and stirred !

Rob and Mike took me out for a lunchtime crepe. Max came along as well.

We had an afternoon earthquake that lasted about 20 seconds and was about a 5.8 on the rectum scale. Very weird indeed. We had minor damage. A statue and a paper picture fell on the floor. Phew.

Diana, Rob, Mike and I went for a really nice Greek/Mediterranean dinner.

All in all a very nice day.

I Just spent the weekend at my mom in Boca. Kind of like a pre birthday celebration. Phil and How were there as well.

How and I went fishing yesterday morning. What a complete failure that was. Didn't catch a bloody thing but at least the ocean was calm and the weather was great. Wait, come to think of it, I did catch some seaweed !

Saturday night we had a wonderful dinner together and then went to see the Planet of the Apes movie. I liked it. Very well done.

2 ECG's
Numerous EKG's
2 Portocath installations
1 Portocath removal
3 Lung taps
2 Pleural effusions.
1 Bout with MRSA

The intent of all this is not to make myself out to be the brave hero. But it shows how much people have to endure battling these awful diseases. Oh yea, thank G_d for good medical and disability insurance.

The alternative to all this is not good !

Chemo 15 (Round 7)

Sitting here since 7:30 am. Weight is stable at 160 lbs and my vitals are all ok.The blood work came back ok and the poison was administered. As I drifted off someone tapped me on the shoulder to let me know it was time to see Dr. Schraeder. The check up was ok but we are going to change my head meds. It seems that a change is needed as the Cymbalta may not be doing it's job anymore. I am going to try Lexpro. I'm not going to get into the head med discussion suffice to say that at times it's needed. Go figure.

I left the infusion center at 11 am basically a happy camper. Slightly "dilly" but fine. When will this end ?

Gene sequence hiccup

The paraffin slides of my tumor that were saved from one of my surgeries in 2009 are no good to use for the gene sequencing. Believe it or not, they do not contain enough tumor (cancer). How ironic.

Dr. Schraeder (my oncologist) and Dr. Krasna (the surgeon) will look at my latest PET/CT scans to determine if some viable tumor can be obtained using the least invasive needle biopsy procedure. They (and I) are quite reluctant to "disturb" anything inside me using anything more invasive. Go figure.

I have to say that when I look at the post title I sure have had a lot of chemo. But you know what ? The alternative is worse !

After a wonderful six weeks off my return to chemo was pretty uneventful. All is well with me in chemo land. The vitals, blood work etc etc.

I also had a blood draw for my complete gene sequencing. I will know in about three weeks whether the tumor sample they have here at St. Joe's will work for the sequencing. Lets hope it will.

Here is our lousy dilemma and no, this is not a joke. Our doggie will soon be 14 years old. He is in good physical shape but unfortunately he is now a little deaf and will soon be blind. If we do the cataract surgery on one of his eyes there is a likelihood that he will not survive the surgery. If we do nothing we know the outcome.

Our thoughts right now are to not subject him to the operation. We understand what will happen and of course, are prepared to do our part in helping him (seeing eye persons). Sh*t, getting old sucks !!!

So much for the reprieve

Shit ! I just can't escape this stuff. On monday I went to my MOHS surgeon to have a Basal-cell carcinoma (skin cancer) removed from my scalp. I actually have 2 to be removed but they only do one at a time. So the surgeon removes the first one and all is well. He biopsies another site on my forehead above my left eye and guess what ? Another Basal-cell to be removed ! One down 2 to go.

So after local numbing and stitches etc. I went home looking a little beaten up. There is no urgency to all of this so my next scheduled surgery is in July. I know................... it could be worse.

A tougher than usual weekend

I am really looking forward to this break from treatment. This time round my bad days were a little worse than usual. On Friday the fatigue kicked in and I spent most of Saturday and Sunday sleeping. The nausea wasn't too bad.

I know it sounds like I'm complaining but I'm not. I understand that there are so many people out there that are far worse off than me. And what good would complaining and whining about things do. So in the immortal words of Rochelle Bass..............."suck it up" !

I just got a cal from my oncologist, Dr. Schraeder. He was pleased with the scan results and I will now have a well deserved 6 weeks off of chemo. Next session scheduled for July 18th. Yay !

Basically, everything that is showing up is reducing in PET intensity (which is a good thing) and there is no spread (an even better thing). But to be certain, I'm not even remotely out of the "woods" yet or in the "R" word.

I am, however, ecstatic at the news. So..............Carpe Diem.

Today was my PET/CT scan. Now, it's hurry up and wait. Not a very comfy feeling. Oh well !

If the scan is stable and no spread then my oncologist is going to give me 6 weeks off of chemo. It may not sound like a big deal but trust me, it is ! It's been over 3 1/2 years of constant treatment but at least I'm still here :)

We shall await the verdict.

The cardiac doc visit

I had a good visit with the cardiac doctor who has been taking care of me since my MRSA infection back in 2009. It seems like my cardiac issues are under control and my meds will be cut in half again.

The low dosage of Crestor that he put me on has worked wonders on my cholesterol. Hopefully I will get the dosage cut at my next 6 month visit.

The basic idea is for me to get off as many meds as I can safely do. The chemo being the biggest prize.

Chemo 13 (Round 7)

Another fairly short and sweet visit to the "poisoning center". Just the way I like it. Everything is normal and stable. Now you know I'm referring to the blood work, vital signs etc. Right ?

On Wednesday I have my PET/CT scan scheduled and here is the deal. If the scans once again, show stable and no spread then I will be given 6 weeks off of all treatment. Even though it doesn't sound like much it means a hell of a lot to me. I need a good break because I have been getting treatment now for over 3 years. Essentially, I will skip a 3 week treatment. Never being satisfied enough, I'm trying to get even more time off. Typical bloody pilot !

Once you have had a Mac you never go back. I am selling my PC desktop and laptop and will now only have one computer. Any one wanna buy some PC's ?

Fiver has joined the ranks

We have a new addition to the Suskin family. Fiver, a small black "lionhead" bunny has come to live at 5 Valley Gate Way. It was a gift from Michael to Robyn. Fiver has joined up with Nyoka (Michael's ball python) and Trechtobal Gomez (Max) to complete the Suskin farmyard !

Of course Max is still "top dog". When he was introduced to Nyoka he couldn't figure out what the hell it was. But he quickly figured out what Fiver was all about. In true Terrier form he just wants to chase Fiver all the time. We are not sure what he would do if he got a hold of her but we aren't about to find out anytime soon.

Quite a number of years ago we were at a petting zoo and the picture below fortold an interesting prophecy. Even better than Nostradamus could have done.

Back in Bulawayo

My welcome back to Bulawayo was fantastic up to a point. I will elaborate later.

Ilan and Silvi picked me up at the airport. After temporarily losing 2 of my bags of medical supplies to Zimbabwe customs we went to Silvi's house to watch the hugely important football (soccer) game between Man United and Arsenal. I say temporarily because I am sure I will be able to recover the supplies and take then to the appropriate medical facilities. As far as the football game is concerned, we lost 1-0. It makes for winning the Premiership a little more difficult and losing to Arsenhole is painful enough.

David and Shelley Lasker had a braai(barbecue) dinner for all of us in the evening. As usual it was a wonderful meal and great chatting and catching up with a bunch of my Bulawayo friends. Also there were Dennis (of ZimKids fame) and his wife Elli.

Had a good nights sleep at Ilan’s home until he woke me up at 6:30 am to tell me that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. What a fantastic wake up call that was. Obama 1 Osama 0. Good riddance.

Now, I don’t know if any of you remember the dead bat picture. It was from a while back and it was Ilan’s cats that had killed and dismembered the bat and left me the gift next to my bed. Well, their welcome this time was to bring in a live field mouse, proceed to play with it for a while and then kill and eat it ! Yuch, but I do have pictures. Quite prophetic though. Rat killed in Abbotabad and mouse killed in Bulawayo !

Here is how my trip started out at Washington Dulles Airport. "Grace"fully falling over backwards on an up escalator thanks to my 2 heavy bags and a backpack. Two good Samaritans were able to put me right side up with no damage done. It must have looked like a bad Monty Python skit.

So now I'm in London sitting in the lounge contemplating what to do for a number of hours as I wait for my connection to Johannesburg. I thought about going to the wedding but realized it was yesterday. Must have been that fall !
